Carolyn Mata is a nationally recognized higher education consultant with over two decades of experience spanning faculty roles, institutional leadership, and state-level policy work. Her career reflects a deep commitment to data-informed decision-making and equity in postsecondary education.
As an IPEDS Educator since 2015, Carolyn has delivered workshops across the country, developed AIR’s most widely used tutorials, and contributed to curriculum and training efforts for institutions and associations alike. She regularly serves on federal advisory panels for the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), including the National Postsecondary Education Cooperative (NPEC) and Technical Review Panels (TRPs), where she is a frequent moderator.
Carolyn has authored multiple commissioned papers on federal data policy, race/ethnicity reporting, and equity metrics, and recently co-led a national webinar on Financial Value Transparency that drew more than 3,000 participants. She has helped states build longitudinal data systems (SLDS), facilitated data literacy efforts for public and private campuses, and is currently advising two states on building basic needs data infrastructure.
Previously, she served as Vice President for Research and Planning at a liberal arts college and held senior research roles with state associations. Her consulting clients span colleges, accrediting agencies, national associations, and major foundations.
