Iqbal Hossain, PhD
Director of Research Data Science, University Analytics and Institutional Research, University of Arizona
Dr. Iqbal Hossain leads the Research Data Science unit at the University of Arizona, where he drives innovation at the intersection of generative AI, unstructured data analytics, and organizational knowledge mapping. As the inventor and principal architect of the UArizona Knowledge Map (KMap), he spearheads a multidisciplinary team of engineers, mathematicians, and researchers to transform disparate data sources—publications, grants, patents, biographical and collaboration records—into an integrated, multi‑dimensional knowledge graph. Under his leadership, KMap underpins a Retrieval‑Augmented Generation (RAG) platform that empowers faculty and administrators with AI‑driven insights into research expertise, collaboration networks, and emerging trends.
A seasoned researcher and communicator, Dr. Hossain earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering from BUET and completed Stanford’s Artificial Intelligence Professional Program. He has published more than two dozen peer‑reviewed articles on topics graph modeling, network visualization, machine learning, NLP, database systems, and information retrieval. With over 17 years of professional experience—ranging from foundational algorithm design to scaling enterprise AI solutions—he excels at guiding teams through complex, unstructured data challenges and translating cutting‑edge research into deployable, high‑impact tools.
Passionate about leadership and mentorship, Dr. Hossain collaborates broadly with academic and industry partners, fostering cross‑disciplinary innovation and training the next generation of data scientists. His strategic vision and hands‑on expertise in generative AI applications continue to shape University of Arizona’s data science roadmap, driving deeper discovery, stronger collaborations, and accelerated innovation across the university.
