Associate Vice President, Institutional Research and Planning The Ohio State University Columbus, Ohio, United States
Session Abstract: The presentation focuses on the results a mixed-methods study employed to investigate the factors associated with career stagnation among associate professors in rank for eight years or more. Nationally, this stagnation particularly affects women and people of color. Full professorship is often viewed as an important prerequisite for future opportunities and professional growth in academic leadership. Results suggested that the following were the major factors that affected associate professors’ decisions not to seek promotion to full professor: not having enough time to devote to research in addition to teaching and service, feeling that their case was not strong enough with regard to research, concerns about work/life balance, and lack of support and mentoring from their department.. We will describe the action steps the university took to address the results of the study.
