Session Abstract: It is not science fiction. The robots are here, and they are helping us analyze open-ended survey comments. Generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT and Copilot are the hot new tool in institutional data analysis. But before diving in, institutional research practitioners should consider implementing an office-wide AI Data Usage policy. Using Isaac Asimov’s Three Laws of Robotics as a conceptual framework, this session guides attendees through crafting their own research-informed AI Usage Policy including procedures limiting risk of harm, recommendations for optimized prompting, and understanding the reality of the robot on the other side of the webpage. The session will end with a discussion on formal and informal AI policies and broader ethical considerations. Session attendees will leave with a policy template and the confidence to draft and implement their own AI Usage Policy when they return to their institutions.
