Heather Mechler arrived at Duke in August 2024 to assume the role of Associate Vice Provost and Director of Institutional Research. In this position, she oversees the reporting and analytics efforts of the Office of Institutional Research to support institutional decision making and external reporting needs. Prior to her time at Duke, Heather was the Director of Institutional Analytics at the University of New Mexico, where she oversaw extensive reporting and analytics efforts to support all five campuses within the UNM system.
She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music and a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from the University of Alabama. After completing her doctoral studies, she spent two years as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Bucknell University in the Education Department, where she taught courses in Educational Psychology, Lifespan Human Development, and Sociology of Education. Her research interests include moral judgment development, emerging adulthood, political and civic engagement, and student basic needs security in higher education.
Heather lives in Durham, NC with her amazing spouse (Scott) and their 3 dogs (MacKenzie, Mina, and Tilly) and 2 cats (Señora and Lord Nelson). In her spare time, she enjoys making music, skiing, travel, cooking, and board games.
