Session Abstract: This presentation will highlight the value of participatory research methods in institutional research, with a focus on the photovoice methodology. Photovoice is a qualitative research method in which participants (in our case, students) use photography to document their experiences, make meaning through group discussions, and advocate for community (campus) change. As a participatory research method, students are considered equal collaborators in the research process. This represents a shift from most methods within institutional research, in which students are often considered the subjects of research, but rarely partners. Presenters will highlight photovoice projects implemented on their campus, including projects related to the experiences of first-generation students and neurodivergent students. Presenters will share an overview of the photovoice process, ways in which projects can be adapted for different purposes, and the impact seen from their various projects.
