Session Abstract: This session explores enrollment trends of first-generation college students (FGCS) among first-time freshmen enrolled in the 26 public universities of the University System of Georgia from Fall 2019 to Fall 2023. We examine FGCS’s educational and background characteristics, academic preparation, academic performance, and individual and family resources, comparing them with continuing-generation college students (CGCS). Participants will gain insights into unique personal and contextual challenges and barriers FGCS face compared to CGCS in terms of access, performance, and retention in college within the University System of Georgia.
