Development of an Instrument to Evaluate Course Design and Faculty Teaching

Session Abstract: The project aimed to create a valid and reliable tool for evaluating course design and faculty teaching. This presentation provides a roadmap for revising course evaluation instruments using Lynda Gratton’s four-step framework (2022): (1) Understand What Matters: Identify challenges in developing a valid evaluation form; (2) Reimagine New Ways of Operating: Explore innovative approaches; (3) Model and Test New Ways of Working: Implement strategies within the organization; and (4) Act and Create: Utilize feedback from current data. The revised evaluation form was piloted in Fall 2023, with adjustments made in Spring 2024. Eleven courses participated in pilot study over the academic year, although not all were offered each semester. Results showed positive feedback, with strong correlations between the course evaluation questionnaires (CEQs) and faculty evaluation questionnaires (FEQs), as well as between the original and revised forms and between the Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 results.
